Southern Louisiana is known for many things, not the least of which is fresh seafood.

If you happen to live in the Baton Rouge area – or travel there – Mr. Menu recommends visiting ‘On The Half Shell’, a seafood hotspot in Prairieville, just 30 minutes south of Louisiana’s state capitol.

For more than 16 years, On The Half Shell has been a favorite spot for seafood fans who crave oysters, shrimp and other delicacies found in the Gulf.  But if seafood isn’t your favorite or if you’re craving something different, you can enjoy down-home Cajun specialties like gumbo, soups and sauces and even catfish, chicken and steak.

House Specialty : Oysters On The Half Shell

On The Half Shell is known for its specialty oyster dishes.  Oysters are served raw (fresh and serve on the half shell), or included in one of its signature recipes including Chargrilled, Bienville, Rockefeller, Poblano or Picante Di Fromaggio.

You can even enjoy a combination of your these when you order the ‘Guidry’s Dozen.’

Like variety? Try the Seafood Sampler featuring fried oysters, shrimp and catfish. Or enjoy the fried Louisiana blue crab claws, or the mushrooms stuffed with crab and shrimp stuffing. All are served with your choice of side including beer battered fried onion rings, jalapeno-tinted hushpuppies or fried okra, pickles and mushrooms.

And you can get your shrimp on with On The Half Shells jumbo gulf shrimp or New Orleans-style BBQ shrimp.

Cajun Cookin’

It’s required that any south Louisiana restaurant offer Cajun-inspired cuisine on its menu. At On The Half Shell, you can find blackened oysters, shrimp and lump crab meat; seafood gumbo, chicken and andouille gumbo, shrimp and corn, crawfish etouffee; and boudin balls served with our house dipping sauce – all Cajun cuisine staples.

How About Breakfast?

On The Half Shell offers custom omelets as well as a variety of specialty Eggs Benedict dishes including traditional, crab, crab cake, eggs Sardou, half shell eggs Sardou with crab and shrimp, and oyster Rockefeller Benedict.

Wings, Dips and Salads

On the Half Shell Wings are offered on a ten-piece platter – jumbo-style – and tossed in the house signature wing sauce and served with Ranch or Blue Cheese.

And if you’re in the mood for a salad ‘On The Half Shell’ offers a Seafood Salad with cold, grilled and blackened options, a Black and Blue salad with sliced sirloin or blackened shrimp, Half Shell Signature salad (blackened, grilled or fried) with shrimp, crawfish, chicken or oyster.

You’ll also found a scrumptious Shrimp Remoulade salad, a Caesar salad option

Platters, Catfish, Chicken and Steak

If you prefer variety, try one of the ‘On The Half Shell’ platters: a Seafood Platter with catfish, oysters, stuffed shrimp, crab fingers, and a cup of gumbo; a Trio Platter with choice of three seafood options; or the Half & Half with choice of two seafoods.

On The Half Shell also offers a wide variety of catfish dishes such as Catfish Victoria, Crawfish On the Bluff, as well as fresh fish including grilled Redfish, Mahi Mahi, tune and Atlantic salmon.

And what restaurant in the south wouldn’t offer at least one chicken entrée? On The Half Shells’ feature chicken dish is ‘Praline Chicken’, fried, grilled or blackened and topped with the house praline sauce.

If fish isn’t your favorite, On The Half Shell hasn’t forgotten you. Consider the Rib-Eye steak, the sirloin or French cut pork chop.

Sides and Desserts

Choose from a variety of sides including: dinner salad, coleslaw, steamed vegetables, corn marque choux, green beans, onion rings, French fries, sweet potato fries, garlic mashed potatoes, baked potato, baked sweet potato, or stuffed potato.

On The Half Shell offers daily lunch specials and catering, plus a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. Flat screen televisions feature popular sports games, local musicians provide live music Monday-Saturday from 6:00 pm until and the Perkins room is available for you to reserve for special occasions.
